George Brassaï - born Transylvania, 1899-1984
Brassai was a Hungarian photographer, sculptor, and filmmaker who rose to international fame in France in the 20th century.
He took his name from the town of his birth , Brasso, in Transylvania, then part of Hungary, later Romania, and famous as the home of the Court Dracula.
Before coming to Paris, he studied art in the academy in Budapest and Berlin.
In the early thirties he set about photographing the Paris at night. The results of the project a fascinating collection of prostitutes, pimps, madams, transvestites were published in 1933 as Paris de Nuit, one of the most
remarkable of all photographic books.
